Joe, 89, lives in Lincoln and first began receiving Meals on Wheels in 2021 following a hospitalization that left him unable to manage daily tasks, including cooking. After a year on the program, his health improved and he was able to step away from the service.
In July 2025, Joe re-enrolled in Meals on Wheels as his circumstances had changed significantly. He began experiencing increasing physical and cognitive challenges, while his spouse was admitted to a memory care facility due to dementia. With these changes, Joe found he could no longer drive, and it was too difficult to keep up with cooking and meeting his own nutritional needs.
Joe shares that he has always loved to cook and wishes he still could. Now, Meals on Wheels provides essential support, ensuring he has regular, reliable meals.
What Joe values most about the program is the connection it brings. He looks forward to seeing the delivery drivers, describing them as “wonderful,” and enjoys the camaraderie they offer. He even knows many of them by name, including Sid, who delivers his meals on Fridays.
Meals on Wheels has played a vital role in helping Joe maintain independence and stay in his home and neighborhood.
